My Ethos & Experience

With experience of both mainstream teaching and supporting children with special educational needs or social and emotional needs, as well as being a parent myself, I am confident that I can support your child to excel.

Ethos

I feel that all children are unique in their personalities, rates of development and learning styles, and that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is not always the most effective way to inspire a love of learning.

I am ardent in my belief that all children enjoy achieving, both academically and socially, and consider tutoring to be a privilege.

My priority is creating and maintaining positive relationships, while developing a tailor made, engaging learning environment where children thrive, and all aptitudes are celebrated.

I employ a ‘growth mindset’ approach, enabling children feel safe to make mistakes and take risks with their learning, thereby building confidence and resilience and allowing them to embrace new challenges.

I aim to make learning an enjoyable experience that inspires children to question and investigate further.

Experience

I am a qualified primary teacher (post graduate certificate of education) with a degree (B.Sc.) in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and a background in Early Years Development.

Throughout my adult life, I have been involved in supporting people to develop new skills and resilience. Formerly a horse riding and outdoor education instructor, I taught people of all ages, including children with a range of physical, mental health and learning needs.

However, after my own son was born, I chose to re-employ my professional qualities in Sure Start Children centres. I worked as a family practitioner planning and implementing sensory and social groups for babies and families. I then continued to train as an Early Years practitioner, before becoming a 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant and eventually training as a teacher.

For eight years I worked in a variety of settings, including mainstream primary schools, an outdoor education centre and a SEMH provision.

Professional development is important to me, and I continue to attend regular training and short courses, as well as staying up to date with recent education research.
